The National Reined Cow Horse Association Board of Directors met June 3 to discuss the NRCHA Derby, scheduled for June 14-19 at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California.
Earlier, the Board had adopted a full-refund policy for entries that opted not to attend due to the concern over the EHV-1 virus. Because of the ensuing substantial reduction in entries, along with the challenge involved in complying with California guidelines as a result of the EHV-1 outbreak, the Board of Directors has elected to cancel the Derby for 2011.
“The NRCHA’s main concern in any situation is the welfare of our equine partners. Canceling our third largest premier event is not a decision that was made lightly,” NRCHA President Kathy Gould explained. “The NRCHA Board is currently reviewing options for rescheduling the event. Those options will be considered during the Board meeting on June 14.”
All Derby and Derby Horse Show entries will be refunded. If checks have not been deposited, they will be returned. If the checks have already gone to the bank, a refund will be issued.
Another modification that resulted from the EHV-1 outbreak is that the number of shows needed to qualify for the 2011 NRCHA World Championship Show presented by John Deere was reduced from three to two.
For more information, contact the NRCHA Office at 580-759-4949.

Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) Update
May 27, 2011
AUSTIN – The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has one confirmed case of the neurologic form of EHV-1 to report today. Preliminary investigation indicates no connection to the Ogden, Utah NCHA event. A Quarter Horse racehorse stabled in Ector County, TX displayed neurologic symptoms consistent with the disease, and ultimately tested positive for EHV-1. All horses on the premises are under quarantine and will be managed according to USDA recommendations for confirmed cases. Additional information is being gathered to determine if any other horses were exposed.
Regarding the Ogden, UT event, there are currently 12 known horses in Texas that attended the event and 174 cohorts (stablemates) remaining under movement restrictions. There are now a total of 8 premises that have been exposed and those premises are in the following counties: Randall, Parker, Jack, Kerr and Mills counties.

Horse owners should contact event organizers in advance to ensure that scheduled events have not been cancelled. Some other states have established emergency rules for entry as a result of this situation.
A list of contact information for all 50 state animal health agencies can be found on the U.S. Animal Association website at http://www.usaha.org/Reference/FederalStateAnimalHealth.aspx or on the USDA website at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/animals/animal_import/animal_imports_states.shtml

The May 26 EHV-1 nationwide situation reported compiled by USDA can be viewed at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/nahss/equine/ehv/ehv_2011_sitrep_052611.pdf USDA’s report shows cumulative data submitted from all involved states. TAHC’s daily updates report the current in-state data.
For information regarding EHV-1, visit www.tahc.state.tx.us . You can also keep up with EHV-1 information through our Facebook (www.facebook.com/TexasAHC ) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/TAHC ) sites.

*Note* To be consistent with reports from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other states, the TAHC is following USDA guidelines for clinical and suspect cases which have very specific criteria to meet the case definition. Currently “suspect” and “confirmed” cases will be the two types of cases that the TAHC reports. The following USDA link outlines the specific definition for what is classified as a “suspect” and/or “confirmed” case: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/nahss/equine/ehv/ehv_ehm_recommendations_051611.pdf

UPDATE …

Our Show is Cancelled for Sat., May 21st

We have been monitoring the updates from the Texas Animal Health Commission and, based on their latest notification, our Saturday show is now cancelled. The email alert received late Thursday afternoon is the strongest wording to date from the TAHC regarding traveling to horse shows or events. All of us at CAQHA are in full agreement that we need to comply with the TAHC request that owners not participate in events this weekend.

From the TAHC …

“The epidemiological investigation of all 300+ plus horses that reportedly attended the NCHA Cutting horse event in Utah continues nationwide, and the number of Texas horses identified as exposed may increase in the following days. Although mandatory cancellation of future events is not anticipated, the TAHC suggests that horse owners consider the risk of participating in upcoming events scheduled for this weekend and/or co-mingling their horses with other horses and equipment (trailers) of unknown history. Because the incubation period is usually about 4-6 days or less, even a one week voluntary stop movement may be enough to nip the cycle of transmission between horses before it grows in scope. Horse owners should contact event organizers in advance to ensure that scheduled events have not been cancelled. Some other states have established emergency rules for entry as a result of this situation, so if interstate travel is planned, owners and/or veterinarians writing health certificates should check in advance to ensure they meet all entry requirements. Finally, it is recommended that all newly purchased horses or introduced horses to a premise should be isolated to help prevent the accidental introduction of EHV-1 (and other diseases) onto the premise.”

Please feel free to contact CAQHA President, Penny Reeves-Goff at pennygoff@hughes.net if you have any further questions. We hope to reschedule another show in the fall. But don’t forget to join us at our June 25th show at the Expo Center in Austin! Thank you for your understanding and we’ll look forward to seeing you in June!

The show bill can be downloaded here or visit our website www.caqha.com.

If it’s your heart’s desire to truly be better with horses, whether it’s for recreation, competition, or just the sheer joy of being around horses, or you want to expand your knowledge of the real nature of horses and how to develop a meaningful relationship with them, one method that is caring, humane, heartfelt — and effective — is the Tellington TTouch Method.

TTouch founder and world-renowned equestrian trainer and behaviorist Linda Tellington-Jones, PhD (Hon) is only presenting a few trainings in the United States in 2011. Here’s a remarkable opportunity to study with her in beautiful Santa Fe, New Mexico, June 24-26 — regardless of your skill level.

The TTouch method of working with horses taught during these three days includes hands-on TTouch body work, ground exercises that encourage positive learning patterns, and the Joy of Riding. “Over the years, I’ve recognized the importance of always honoring the horse,” says Linda Tellington-Jones. “Every aspect of the Tellington TTouch Training is done with respect for the horse, acknowledgement of the horse’s innate intelligence, and without fear, pain or anxiety.”

Participants in this training will come away with a new perception of horses and how to develop a partnership with them. TTouch results for horses include a deepening of trust between the human and the horse, and improving the horse’s coordination, athletic ability and focus while the horse’s handler/rider learns more about becoming safe, confident and skilled. “We may even do a few fun demonstrations of riding without a bridle,” smiles Linda.

What You Will Learn . . .

Regardless of your discipline, preferred breed or level of experience, you will learn tools and techniques that can foster the magical partnership between you and your horse that most people strive for a lifetime to achieve.

The course includes:

TTouches for improved mental focus, physical awareness, release of tension and anxiety
TTouches for superior performance
Ground exercises (including the labyrinth for higher learning) that help develop concentration and balance
Learning an approach to training horses that is based on cooperation rather than domination, and on understanding rather than control
How to reduce fear in horses, thereby increasing potential for learning
Safe, simple, easy-to-learn training techniques
Under saddle exercises that are safe and fun
The ‘Joy of Riding!’ including the possibility of riding bridleless
Evaluation of your horse’s personality (bring photos!)
How to enhance your horse’s good behaviors and help correct any behavior challenges by using what you’ll learn in this training

To Register . . .

Fee for the three-day training is $495 (plus NM tax of 6.625%) if paid before May 12. After that date, the cost is $575 plus tax.

To register for the training in Santa Fe, New Mexico, call 800.854.8326, email Kirsten@TellingtonTrainings.com or Register Online. Take action now and receive the benefit of early bird pricing — an $80 savings if you enroll before May 12!.
